Where This Started: Newspaper Crosswords at the Beach

Before any of this was an app, it was a folded-up newspaper page and a pencil that kept disappearing into the sand.

Summers meant the beach, and the beach meant a stack of Turkish newspapers — Hürriyet, most memorably — with a crossword tucked in next to the day's headlines. Somebody would grab the puzzle page before anyone could argue about it, and that was the plan for the next hour: towel down, squint against the glare, and work through the grid one clue at a time while everyone else was in the water.

There's something about solving a crossword in your first language, in a place you associate with having nothing else to do, that sticks with you in a way a polished app experience usually doesn't. No leaderboard, no undo button, no autosave — just a grid, a clue list, and whatever you could remember or guess your way into. If you made a mistake, you saw the eraser marks. If you finished one, you actually felt like you'd finished something.

That's the feeling we kept coming back to while building Crossword Builder. Not the nostalgia for its own sake — the actual mechanics of it. The satisfaction of a clean grid. The small thrill of a long answer finally clicking into place because of a crossing letter you weren't sure about. The fact that someone else made that puzzle, on purpose, for you to solve.

Most crossword apps today are built for daily-puzzle consumption: open the app, solve the one puzzle it gives you, close the app. That's a fine model, but it skips the part we actually cared about — the making. Somewhere between a folded newspaper at the beach and a phone in your pocket, the tools to actually build a crossword stayed locked away with professional constructors and their specialized software. We wanted to hand that part back to anyone who's ever finished someone else's puzzle and thought, "I bet I could make a better one."

So that's really what Crossword Builder is: a bet that the person who grew up doing the newspaper crossword on vacation still wants to make one, not just solve one.
