5 Tips for Building Your First Crossword

Building your first crossword can feel intimidating — real constructors make it look easy, but there's a real craft to it. Here are five things that'll make your first grid go a lot smoother. 1. Start with your theme entries, not the grid

Before you touch a single black square, decide on the two or three longest, most interesting answers you want in the puzzle. Everything else — the grid shape, the shorter fill — gets built around them, not the other way around.

2. Keep symmetry simple
